My dress size does not reflect this, but the truth is I have trouble swallowing. As early as junior high school, I remember choking on my Parker House rolls at lunch. Later on it was hot dogs at ball games, pizza at parties, and French dip sandwiches in front of my impressionable new in-laws. Highly embarassing.
I have learned to compensate by drinking lots of water, taking small bites and avoiding the foods that are most difficult to get down. (Cheesecake, by the way, is never a problem.) But a few years ago, I was diagnosed with a Schatzki ring--a membrane in my throat. Every five years or so, I go and get it "stretched."
Today was stretch day. No big deal. A nice long nap in the middle of the day, with a surprisingly spacious esophagus when I wake up.

I love the title...like totally :)
I am fascinated...I have never heard of having to be, "stretched". Truly, fascinating. Do you have pain or burning or something afterward?
I think I need the opposite of this procedure...like having my jaw wired shut, or something...
whoah! my dad has to get his esophagus stretched too!
That should certainly require a recovery in a hotel spa with room service, right? You CAN'T be asked to care for children after such a trying medical procedure.
wow, hot date.
eeek.
Hey I have THE SAME PROBLEM! I gagged up burger and fries all over a new date, cause I couldn't swallow it down. It's worse with meat, potatoes and bread (thus the hamburger issues). I had no idea about the stretching. Cause I really need new ways to get food down my throat.
You know, people pay good money to have a ring in their esophagus. It's called fat surgery. Why don't you leave it?
That is so interesting. I've never heard of that condition before. Any excuse to get a nap mid-day right?
I'm with Christie; hie yourself to the spa! At least the day spa.
My dad has the same problem! I don't think that he has ever seen the DR. about it though. It sounds miserable. Find that spa! and fast.
Interesting! I've never heard of that diagnosis. Whatever it takes to be able to eat, right!!!!!???
We have the same problem!! I went in and saw the ENT and he told me I had the smallest esophagus he had ever seen in all his years of medicine. Unfortunately it has not stopped me from eating, dang it!!!!!!
I'm going to have the procedure done when I get the guts. I have a medical phobia, big time. Nice to know you can survive it though!
Wow, I've heard of that before. Never known anyone who in real life who had to do it though. Well, I guess I still don't in real life though.
Hoping to meet at Blogapalooza!
That is so crazy! I have never heard of this before. Does it hurt? Are you asleep? Do you just need it stretched every so often or will you have surgery? I'm so curious about this now. I hope you're ok. The feeling of choking is so scary-I'm glad you're getting help for this.
I have never even heard of this!!! How annoying to not be able to swallow. Ya know when you get that potato that takes too long to go down? I HATE that! I can't imagine having every food go down that way!
