Healing in the Pages

Life with a special needs kid can be isolating. My parenting experiences are frequently different than those of my friends and neighbors. Often I feel alone and unsuccessful. Progress is painstaking. My triumphs look tiny to the rest of the world.
After Jake's initial diagnosis, I flooded myself with information from all sources. But lately, reading one more autism book has been the LAST thing I want to do with my incredibly-shrinking free time.

Making Peace with Autism by Susan Senator is not just another autism book. It is one woman's heartbreaking and hopeful story. I found myself crying and nodding in agreement with a fellow footsoldier who has fought in so many similar battles, describing them with honesty.

The world of autism is full of questions. And, although Senator does give some helpful suggestions and a large list of resources, I found it healing to read about a mom who doesn't have all the answers. She sounds a lot like me.

I can see how books like that would be so comforting. I am glad you can find healing in those pages. Jake is definitely a very lucky boy.

My favorite autism book. I feel exactly the same as you- not one more 'a' book. In the first 2 weeks after J was diagnosed I read 7 books. Seriously.
It's been almost 6 years now. It's a long journey.
But I LOVE this book.
Glad I have you to lean on as well. :)

Whatever the challenge you face, I think you immediately start searching for answers. Eventually you get used to the idea that nobody has the exact answers. And then you realize maybe that is the answer. Jake was the answer to your prayers, and you are the answer to his.

I guess a lot about autism is a mystery, and it's good to be able to find some common experiences with this author. I respect you guys.

It would be so easy if all disabilities were the same and there was a handbook that came attached to a babies toe if he/she were going to be challenged.

(Delivery might be a challenge then tho'!!!)

Gabi, you're such a fabulous mom and you can see that in all of your kids. We love Jake so much - can't imagine our family without him!

To a great person, who accepts all that comes her way, may you always feel your worth and worthiness.

I agree with the others. You are a wonderful mother and a blessing to the life of your sweet boy.

I love how you called her a, "footsoldier". It really is true.
