Fahrfegnugen

Meet my high school crush. I'd pined since the first time I saw Goldie Hawn in Foul Play, crusing up the Pacific coastline with Barry Manilow singing in the background.

When I finally passed my driving test on the fifth (Or was it the sixth? I forget.) try, Mom and Dad got me my own vintage German sweetie. We were the perfect match--both petite, curvy and a little quirky.

Unfortunately, like most high school relationships, ours came to a premature crashing halt.

Sometimes I wonder what might have been...

What was your first fahrfegnugen? Did it end amicably or in an ugly smash-up?

Oh, yeah...a totally ugly smash up ended my first relationship. It was a short lived love affair. I rolled my parents' Ford Bronco II. The break up was really my fault...a little, "failure to yeild the right of way" came between us. When I was pulled from the car I should have broken up with that majestic Bronco properly. It would have been more sensitive of me to say, "It's not you...it's me..."

My dad went to a car auction and got me a '69 baby blue convertible mustang. He must have been feeling a little crazy that day. I (being the ungrateful teenager) wasn't very excited about the car (it wasn't the classic everyone knew- it was more of a muscle car) Dissappointed before I got behind the wheel. It was a 4 speed and you could go 0-60 in first gear... you could also punch it goin' 60 and it would throw you back in your seat. It was SWEEEEEEEEEET! I will forever remember that car. (and the 10 miles to the gallon)

Wow, rich kid! I had to drive my parents old '72 brown station wagon. I blogged about it last summer.

What happened there? Just search on my blog using the term 'buffalo'. That's a pretty tantalizing preview, I think...

Mercury Montego, cinnamon color (sounds better than ugly 70's rust color) traded it in when we got married. It was a boat and I put it in the ditch a few times.

Nice set of wheels there Gabi! I had an '86 Honda Civic. I liked it. Until my younger sister totaled it. Then I bummed rides off friends.

Mom...You already know the whole sad story. I can't go there yet.

Do you mean the story of when you tried to turn your car around INSIDE the garage? That story? That's a pretty good story. I think your blog friends need to hear it. I could always get Josh to blog-jack me and tell it on my blog...

No Stie, I think she was referring to the first day I drove it to school and side-swiped the Sr. Class President's black Camaro, drove away and lied about it. Or maybe a few months later when I came up over a small hill, was blinded by the sun and completely smashed into a parked car.

But the 360 in the garage was a classic.

My first car was a hand me down from the big bro. I drove it till it died. Literally. On the freeway in the middle of nowhere. Engine gave up. Sigh. It wasn't fun.

I got a red volkswagon rabbit (diesel) that I ALWAYS forgot was diesel...and who, at 16 knows you're supposed to get the oil changed...my sister (Diane) commented on her cinnamon colored montego...that thing was the family sore eye!

1976 Chevy NOVA. It was the color of pooh, and therefore earned the name, "the big pooh." I know so lady like. I hated that big ugly thing with plaid seats until I realized the boys all thought it was cool and fought over who got to drive it. Suddenly, I didn't hate it any more.

I never had my own, BUT, I was lucky enough to have my choice of a monster full-sized, GMC blue stripped van or a copper chevette that had a sexually charged rainbow sticker on the back window and holes in the floor boards that sprayed dirty water when traveling over mud puddles (which are never ending when you live in northern Minnesota).
I never did crash them, but I drove the chevette off of a dirt road and into one mad cow.

Never had a car but I did get to drive my family's brown-striped Econoline van complete with curtains. If I ever drove that to school, I parked a half mile away and sat low so no one would see me.

A turquoise 1972 Vega with an aluminum block engine, ask your husbands, they'll understand.

My sister and I used to water ski in the canal behind our house. We used the neighbors 'VW Bug' or Dad's tractor to pull us. (it was hard to get up, they didn't go very fast.) Good times

Mine was a hand me down Mazda 626. The moon roof leaked so every time it rained (in Connecticut), I would have to pop my umbrella and hold it over my head as I drove down the road to school. No tinted windows either, darn it!

My first car was an 84 Mustang......this was in 89. I loved that car like crazy! I wrecked it a couple of times but nothing serious. What ended our relationship was my stupid exhusband! He swore the motor was going so we traded it in. Years later I met the woman who had bought it....she'd never had ANY trouble with it.
I'm still bitter!

Remember in my post of my 101 things about me and I posted about how I smashed the vice principals parked car? Yeah...
SO been there, done that.
The yellow bug is so cute.

My first rig was a 63 beetle too. Only it wasn't a flashy color, it was more the color of a wet sidewalk. And it always made a horrible grinding sound when going into 2nd gear (not good when trying to impress friends with new driving skills).

I stopped back in to thank you for reminding me of Bean & Bacon soup (I'd commented on a post of yours a few weeks ago about pantry staples). We've been lunching on it and it takes me back to the good old days of being the child in the family. Anyway, now I see you've become an international debate moderator! Wow. That was a really clever post. And, by the way, I'm linking to you from mine because I find your writing irresistable.

What is it about girls and VWs? Mine was a red convertible VW but with a licence plate that said "Herbie". I loved that car! I only got to drive it if I got up in time to make it to seminary on time. My parents knew how to motivate! So cliche...the blonde from California driving the red convertible...No wonder my dad would call me a "mormon american princess".

I realize I'm late, but I had to add. The first car I drove was a Vanagon. Blue. Stick shift, giant steering wheel, impossible. I stalled that thing more than I drove it. Now, though, I can drive a stick like a race car driver.
