Valentine's Day Is...

A bright red kiss in the middle of the grey season.
A class-sized box of Happy Days cards to distribute to your 25 closest friends.
(The Fonz says, "Aaaaay! You're cool, Valentine!")
Chocolate, conversation hearts and frosted sugar cookies.
Pink and red envelopes in your mailbox.
Daffodils for my mom, from her German-speaking boyfriend.
Something made with doilies, glitter and construction paper.
The FTD man with two-dozen long-stemmed reds.
What was your all-time favorite Valentine? Was it lacy or racy? Spicy or sweet? From an old friend, a boyfriend, or a secret admirer?
I'm having a little Valentine's Day contest...because I think I've got the world's best Valentine's story. If you think yours is pretty good (or just entertaining), please comment.
If I think your story tops mine, I will send you a Valentine surprise package.
Winners will be announced next week.

Here's mine: Our first Valentines together, which was also our first one as a married couple, was particularly memorable. I had it in my head that I had to have a dozen red roses. I wasn't demanding, or anything. I just really thought that was the height of romance. Well, we were poor as all newly married couples are. Greg was in grad school and I was working full time. It still amazes me that I made such a piddly salary with a college degree. But I digress... Greg is/was extremely freaked out by needles. He had never given blood or anything of the kind. He also does not cook. Valentine's night, he had a gorgeous, amazing dinner prepared. He had asked someone in the ward to teach him how to make a meal. It was this incredible steak with the trimmings. In the center of the table, was a huge bouquet of red roses courtesy of Greg. He had given plasma that morning between classes and used the payment to give me the most romantic Valentine's Day ever. I still get a bit teary-eyed thinking of the work and sacrifice he went to. After all these years, he can now get me very elaborate gifts, but that first gift always stands out as the sweetest and the purest.

My favorite Valentine's Day happened in 1998. The cute red head who lived next door had asked me out for the first time. (He later explained that he knew it was cheesy, but he was going to Hawaii with the golf team the next day and couldn't wait a whole week to ask me out.)
It had snowed on his plans to drive to Park City, so we ended up driving from Provo to Salt Lake, catching some Mexican food, then watching a movie. While I know you're thinking that is not romantic, we talked the entire time about family, friends, education, dreams, past experiences, and hopes for the future. When we got back to Provo, it was 1 in the morning. We stayed out talking in my driveway until 4. When we finally said goodbye, I knew that he was the greatest guy I had ever known. I knelt down to pray and asked that if nothing more happens, to please let him become my best friend. We were married 10 months later.

I have nothing to share. Nathan and I are kind of bah-hum bugs with Valentine's day. We like to do nice things spontaneously, not according to the calendar. Such rebels we are.

I am DYING to hear your story though. It sounds like a juicy one.

You already told mine. And I've already told it 100 times. But it is truly the best.

Josh is a big time romantic (which surprises most people because he comes off as "macho"..anyway...). All 10 of our Valentine's days have been wonderful but I think our first was the best. We had started dating a couple of weeks before. He told me to come over to his house for dinner that night. When I got there, he had a whole table set with candles, rose petals, conversation hearts in a vase, a decked out dinner (spaghetti of course- still the only thing he really knows how to make). You get the idea. It was beautiful and I was shocked. It was the first time I saw his romantic side. That night he told me he loved me and I will never forget the feeling that I felt...I still think about it every Feb. 14th. I'll try to post a pic that I took of him on that night on my blog so you can see how cute it all looked.
Can't wait to hear yours.

Once, at the beginning of a Valentine's blind date, my date asked if I would come into her apartment and quickly help her move a couch. In an effort to make a good impression I kindly obliged. With her and all her roommates in the front room I carelessly picked up the couch and let my pecks flex unrestrained. Well, as those of you who know me can probably guess, my rippling pecks, shoulders, and arms ruptured my shirt like Mt Saint Helens leaving it torn asunder and hanging useless from my belt. I don’t know who was more shocked, them or me. I just stood there, couch in hand above my head, with all of my bulging, glistening, strapping, rippling, chiseled, glowing, gorgeous, herculean muscles on display for all the girls to ogle; the very archetype of masculinity trapped in a hot-den of rabid femininity. Well, naturally they started swooning and shrieking with pleasure and breathing heavy and heaving their bosoms with passionate rapture; so much so that I thought some of the poor creatures were going to hyperventilate and/or bosoms were going to fly free from their lacy, cupped restraints. That was only the beginning. The breathing and heaving was soon followed by the fighting which broke out over who had the right to love me up and bare my children. You could have cut the angst filled fertility with a knife. There was screaming, clawing, hair pulling, gouging, punching, kicking, back biting, and all kinds of slanderous gossiping. And all the while I’m just standing there awkwardly with my dates couch over my head.
I was SO embarrassed.

No special story that I can think. I'll read the others.

I just wanted to comment on your Parent Letter on Annie's sight because it was wonderful. I love what I learn from the diverse-and-yet-the-same groups of bloggers. You are so great.

I can only think of a couple of valentines moments: getting flowers from far away Greg when I was homesick in London, seeing the pencilled in love message on my Snoopy valentine from my secret crush in 6th grade, and one lucky year in high school when I got flowers or candy from FOUR guys! (I was as shocked as you are.)

Can't wait to hear yours. (And Rochelle, that was very sweet!)

I really like the unmighty's, but I'm a little skeptical.

My vote is for Rochelle's so far. It reminds me a little of The Gift of the Madji, which is one of my favorites.

We are not good in the Valentine's Day Department. It is a few days before my birthday and usually gets rolled into one...but I can't wait for your story.

My youngest daughter's birthday is November 13th. Do the math. Yes, she was born exactly nine months (minus one day)after V-day. Now, I know, this will some day cause her much teenage embarrassment because everyone has counted nine months back from their birthday just to be silly. But, I hope that one day (and it may take many days, years probably) she will realize how lucky she is to have two parents who love each other and WANTED her and were given the best Valentines Day present ever. (Even if it didn't arrive until nine months later!)

Had to come back and read The Unmighty's comments. He always cracks me up. Today he did not disappoint.

Lisa, I was born November 17th and my brother was born (two years ahead of me) on November 18th. All I can say is DOUBLE EWWW. Valentines Day may never be the same for me.
