So here is what I've been wondering lately...
Why am I spending so much time and money here?
Knowing that everything I buy will soon end up in here.
Why am I making and eating so many of these?
Knowing that soon they will haunt me here.
Why am I getting my kids so many of these?
When my basement already looks like this?
Why does December feel so much like this?
When it's supposed to just be about this.
Why does Christmas turn me into this?
When I just want to be like this all the time.
Today I tried to get off the holiday merry-go-round and find some of the peace I've been missing. Here is a list of the things I did that helped me feel a little better.
(Note to self: reread and repeat...often!)
To find the missing peace:
- Clean off desk, combine all to-do lists into one master list.
- Re-evaluate and eliminate some of the to-do's.
- Combine and simplify the have-to-do's.
- Exercise outside in the "sunshine" and fresh air.
- Feed spirit and body with real nourishment.
- Wear a red hoodie and comfortable shoes.
- Throw at least 15 things away.
- Eat a chocolate mint truffle.
- Read aloud to children.
- Talk to a loved one on the phone.
- Write a thank you note.
- Do a secret Santa service.
- Complete a dreaded task while watching a Christmas movie.
- Blog.
- Ahhhhhhhhhhh....peace at last!

You go girl! Good job knowing what you need and getting it done.
Amen! I needed to remember that today.
I would also add do as much shopping online as possible. And only do the traditions you love. I try to think of January as an extension of the holidays and sometimes wait and do a party or send cards then :).
By the way, your hair looks fantastic :)
How come you look cute even in your frazzled picture? That's just not fair!
Oh. Annie beat me to the punch. Your hair is adorable. It matches YOU!
(And I mean adorable in a very grown up, very stylin, so flattering way.)
I can relate to this post. I need to simplify my life. And running in the sunshine sounds like fun (ya know, when it's over and you're all done and fulfilled).
I'm going to repeat this list to myself too. I must. OH, and yeah. Your hair IS cute.
Why are you ALWAYS so good? Honestly, your posts just end up making me feel like this blogging thing is totally good for me.
I agree with Jessica. Except all I need is the blogging.
The hair is very cute, I must agree with everyone else. I have simplified this year by not getting a tree. We'll be out of town anyway and have four little fake ones around the house. Skipping the baking of goodies and giving fruit baskets. Moms will love me I think!
I ache to get off the merry-go-round. Why can't I do it?!
You have a lot of toys. I want to come over to play.
Throwing stuff away really helps me too. I don't know why. Thanks for the list. Hopefully that stuff works for me too.
You just blew my mind.
That was great. It can get so hectic this month. I'm going to the temple this morning to get a little reminder-break.
Your pictures and feelings are sooo true--right on. Glad your "plan" worked and you found a respite of peace! Isn't it funny how writing a note to someone just feels better? Of course, the truffle isn't too shabby either.
good point, gab. after going to a sweet nativity last night, i realized how crazy it can get, when it's supposed to be so simple.
you are a gem. keep up the cheer and the mint truffles, january's goals are just around the corner!
You are so right. I love your list. I love the throwing 15 things away (I will have to do it when my husband isn't here). I've really wanted to move in a more simple direction as things around me move at the speed of light, the trick is trying to figure out what less exactly is. I love your suggestions.
Loved it. You are so awesome...that is all I need to say!
Your thoughts are exactly my thoughts. Great list. I definately need to stop eating and throw 15 things away.
Great list. I feel the same about all you said. Tonight I yelled at my kids that they weren't getting any presents cause I don't want more crap on the floor. They weren't too sad since they know they'll still get presents. It's just so ridiculous to get more stuff!
I remember waking up in the morning, thinking how peaceful it felt to lay in bed, knowing that the second I put my feet on the floor it would start to feel like a merry-go-round. I'd lay there until a few kids climbed in with me and I felt like I was on the tilt-a-whirl. Life's just a big amusement park.
You forgot to mention: get a babysitter and go to the spa.
Now THAT is peace.
