Carrying on the Tradition

My first grader has discovered reading in bed. Every night she begs me to leave the light on for just "one more story..." I try to look stern, "All right...just one more." But inside my heart bursts into song...Hallelujah! I've won her over to my side.

Can't wait to share with her some of my childhood favorites: The Boxcar Children, Trixie Belden, Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing, Little House on the Prairie, Ramona and Beezus, The All-of-a-Kind Family, The Little Princess, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Shel Silverstein & Jack Prelutsky poems. The list goes on and on...

What were your favorite "past-bedtime" reads? I'll add them to the list!

p.s. If you are my children's grandparent (or just really, really bored) and want to see more adorable shots of my children, taken by their artistic aunt, click here.

I loved all Richard Scary books. I have a bunch for my kids now and it brings back such memories. Many evenings (like tonight) I have to pry Maren off the couch from her book to come eat dinner. But yes, it is a great challenge to have to deal with .

Oh, I'm so happy for her! I'll know she's truly your daughter when she props her book to read while she dries her hair, and in the car for the boring red-light stops.

Greg and I were just talking about this last night. I am so loving that Jane is into her Illustrated Classics. She is reading Jane Eyre right now. Yea! I am hoping that when she is older and reads better, she'll have developed a taste for the classics and goes back to the real ones.

I loved reading Nancy Drew at night when I was little.

those were all my favorites too. Can't think of others. My kids have all really enjoyed the Magic Tree house series.

I loved Nancy Drew as well as the rest on your list. I am currently reading "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" to my kids. That was also one of my favs. Go Emily!

So cute. I was like that as a young child. My 2nd grader takes after her dad, and is asleep before she has the chance to turn the first page!

I'm chiming in with Nancy Drew, too. Loved Nancy Drew. I have vivid memories of reading those books! I think I read all of them... could never get enough!

I loved the Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary books as well and was just thrilled when the girls were finally old enough to start reading them. G is big into Nancy Drew now and H carries her copy of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" everywhere!

Tee hee! I just have to say, my parents wouldn't let us have Where the Sidewalk Ends because it had a couple of poems about picking your nose.

True.

Roald Dahl books! And Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.

And I'm jealous...I don't know anyone who reads as much as me, and I cannot get my almost 9 year old to LOVE chapter books, except Junie B. One day...?

I was a huge fan of all the Beverly Cleary books too! Henry and Beezus and Ramona were my favorites. Also, a Wrinkle in Time and From the Mixed Up Files....Loved them all!

I had to think about this post for a while. I'm so glad your daughter is following in your footsteps.

I have a ten year old daughter who is a word hound and I love it. Her current favorites are historical fiction books that she gets at the library. The other thing she really loves is listening to books on cd in her room. It has opened up different genres for her depending on what they have at the library.

I wish I had as much time to read as I did when I was a kid.
