Backseat Drivers

I predict a whole lot of twinkie posts coming in the near future. My guys are almost five. And is there anything cuter than an almost-five-year-old-boy?

Only one thing.

Two of them.

These two are just so bloggable right now. They remind me of little tourists venturing into the Land of BigKid. Wandering around with wide, wondrous eyes. Trying to speak the native tongue with just a trace of an accent and a few endearing mispronunciations. Their excitement in the everyday is contagious.

Typically, our days together consist of morning cleanup (me) and Curious George (them). Then we go to the gym where they do dance class or gymnastics and I try to reach my target heart rate. On non-workout days, we stay home and make cookies, effectively undoing all gym time. While the cookies bake, we construct a supercool marble track or Lego tower, and then I drive them to afternoon preschool.

Driving with the boys is quite an experience. There's the whole sock/shoe/schoolbag/jacket obstacle course. Then seat assignments, stowing luggage and belt fastening. Actually a flight attendant would be helpful.

The twinks are very definite in their travel preferences. Luke has opinions about road music. (His current playlist: Barenaked Ladies, the Cars soundtrack and Auntie Min's mix CD.) Sam watches the gas tank. Other areas of interest include: the GPS (Show map, please, Mom!), the windshield wipers (Back window, too!) and climate control. (Turn on the fan. We're sweating!)

As they critique my driving, warn me of yellow lights and abuse the automatic window privilege, I can almost imagine what it will be like to drive with them when they are two almost-seventeen-year-olds. Is there anything more obnoxious, expensive and scary than a new teen driver?

Only one thing.

Two of them.

Yikes.

Oh, boy. Good luck with that. I can't imagine twin boys. My 6 and 4 yr olds are independently and together handfuls enough. Your world still sounds eerily familiar to mine though.

Oh, Man. I hadn't really thought about what your life will be like in 12 years. Whew. You better take a nap, now!

Now, that I think about it...I'd better do the same thing.

Double the pleasure, double the fun.

My almost five year old needs to hang out with your boys. His favorite music is Metro Station's "Shake it."

They are twice the fun.

Saturday was the first time I rode with my teen and didn't have a knot in my stomach. We are making progress.

I love Twinkie stories. I bet the person who invented Twinkies had twins: two squishy, adorable, golden boys filled with surprises.

I snuggled in bed with my six year old boy this morning-YUMMY! Softest cheeks in the family-I told him that and he promised not to tell his siblings and then giggled. I can't imagine having two-double the softness and giggles.

I am referring my sister with twins to read this awesome post. Her boys turn two in June, and life has changed dramatically since they both can RUN at lightning speed and turn on a dime, now.

I LUH-HOVE, "the endearing mispronunciations" you described. Those make my glamour filled life all worth it.

I laughed at your saying you need a flight attendant. So well said.

Oma's comment totally cracked me up. Clearly, we can see where you get your creativity from.

I LOVE those twinks. I want to steal them from you. They are so stinking cute.

Ugh, taking kids places gives me heartburn. It's such drama getting all the kids in and out. I make Derick ride in a car seat. More drama. So does Grace. Further drama. It's just a barrel of fun when we go somewhere.

I loved all my 5 year old boys (3 of them). I like that you call them Twinkies.

Very cute.

Oh I love five. Such a cute age!!
Gabi, driving with 15-16 year old, even one of them, is worse than driving with a herd of five year olds. Because you DO know that 15 year olds know EVERYTHING...and YOU are a mere obnoxious nuisance in their otherwise perfectly self absorbed life. Buckle up.

Oops, I forgot to end...and YOU, lucky lady....get it times two!!!

I agree with Andrea, you are a super mom.
If I had two of my son, I would be certifiably nuts. I think most people at my grocery store suspect that I may just be nuts, but it hasn't been certified...yet.

Sounds like a nice life with your twins. But as you say, it is hard to imagine being ready for them to get behind the wheel(s) as teenagers.
