My favorite Halloween books are more giggles than goosebumps. High-interest illustrations are a must. Here are three that I don't mind reading over and over all month...
"The Witch Who Lives Down The Hall" by Donna Guthrie.A little wordy for preschoolers, but perfect for the elementary crowd. I got it for .95 from Scholastic and have loved reading it aloud for years.
"The Monster at the End of This Book" by GroverMy kids do NOT like Sesame Street, but they love this book. Who doesn't?
"Ghost's Hour, Spook's Hour" by Eve BuntingAny book by Eve Bunting is a favorite! My mom gave this one to Jake, because it's about a frightened little boy with the same name. Could be a reassuring bedtime favorite all year long!

Two of my all-time favorite Halloween books are out of print. Maybe you friends can help me find them? The first is "Fly Fly Witchy"--I used it as a reading teacher, and the kids loved to sing the words. Also, remember "The Goblins'll Get Ya Eff Ya Don't Watch Out"? The old spooky poem about Little Orphan Annie. Mom? It's not even on Amazon. Who wrote it? I'd love a copy!

I don't have any leads on the mystery but I'm happy to hear about the Eve Bunting Halloween book. Now I'm going to have to go get out our Halloween decorations and books, too!

I was going to say to try Amazon because I have found books out of print for sale through them. I am sorry you couldn't find them. Hmmph!
I keep our Halloween and Christmas books with the decorations, too! We like, "Gus the Friendly Ghost" even though it isn't really about Halloween...he is just a friendly Ghost. We don't do super scary books here, either...too much nightmare potential.
I LOVE the grover book! And, "The Spooky Old Tree" by the Berenstains!
The Grover book is my all time fave!! My mom used to recite the Little Orphan Annie poem to us - she had the whole thing memorized (and still does, probably.) Creepy poem! I love .95 book order books! I just saw the cutest pop-up monster book by Maurice Sendak (of "Where the Wild Things Are) and a couple of other authors called "Mommy?" and the illustrations and pop-ups are amazing. I might need to save my pennies though before I add it to my collection... it's a bit more than the Scholastic bargains.

I pack up my holiday books with the home decor as well. I am way behind. Haven't gotten the Fall box out yet. Maybe I'll go do that now.
I LOVE that Grover story. He is the best monster.
I love a book called, Frank Was a Monster Who Wanted to Dance by Keith Graves. It is a really sweet story about how Frankensteins body parts fall off when he shimmys. A really sweet, not scary, Halloween book.

anyway. you have motivated me to get my boxes out sooner than later. i love to decorate, but last week was so nuts that i lost my drive. thank you for restoring my halloween mojo.
I only have one Halloween book, but about 40 Christmas ones. Looks like I'll have to start buying some Halloween books!

The book is actually called "The Gobble-uns'll Git You Ef You Don't Watch Out." It's James Whitcomb Riley's "Little Orphant Annie" illustrated by Joel Schick.
My grampa B. used to recite this poem to me and I love it, even though it's pretty scary for little tiny kids. Another story I got because I heard you telling it is "A Dark, Dark Wood."
