Having a Blast in the Past

Em's school turned 50 years old this year (and, believe it or not, this is a relatively NEW school in our historical town)...so the back-to-school social was a Sock Hop this year.

(Ward, June and the "Beaves"...plus a farmer's child!)

The PTO completely knocked itself out. Normally, I get annoyed with committee-stuff, but this was amazing. The whole cafeteria was decorated like a drive-in....complete with a black & white movie, hamburgers, hot dogs and an ice cream stand.

The gym was transformed into a juke-box jam. The kids loved it and all the moms who grew up with "Grease" and "Happy Days" had a good time, too.

Prizes included Slinkys, paddle-balls, and sunglasses. Em almost won the hula hoop contest!

Who created this fabulous bulletin board? I don't know, but I think she is a genius!

The whole evening was just peachy keen!

I LOVE this idea for a party!! I may have to throw it for my mom's 70th birthday. You looked great and the glasses are fab. Kudos to that committee. Thanks for sharing it with all of us!

I was one of those wack-job parents who would be totally planning that event. Notice that was in the past-tense? You'll grow out of it eventually. I prefer to just pay and play now.

Love your look and the red glasses, I need some readers like that!

That is seriously a TON of work. Looks like everyone had fun, and I love Davy Crockett's coonskin hat.

Your bulletin board looks great and somebody can really paint! The cars, the juke box and all of the decorations are so wonderful.

Kids are so good at hula hoops -- my niece can walk forward and backward while she's doing it. Amazing! And that was probably the nicest bulletin board I've ever seen. Do they have a bulletin board hall of fame? If not, they should and yours would totally make it in!

Is that a Minnie Mouse Pez on the bulletin board? Pure genius!! You and your family look great. What an amazing event. So much work went into it! I feel like I should hurry and throw a 50's party just to use all of those great ideas. Congrats to Emily on the hula hoop contest - that takes some skill!!

All I can think about is your nifty glasses!

What a great party. I have never seen such great decorations at a school party.

My mom had glasses just like that, and I had a poodle skirt. Somehow it looks more fun now than it was in real life.
