Staples

These cookies were a staple of my childhood. Along with peanut butter and banana sandwiches, Twizzlers, Germade mush (ugh!), tuna salad on buttered toast, turkey steaks and sunflower seeds. Some foods were just always on hand.

Isn't it funny how every household has it's own sights, smells and staples?

My favorite babysitting clients introduced me to Mint Milano cookies and pretzels with Ranch dressing. A high school friend taught me how to make graham cracker peanut butter sandwiches. And my husband still is trying to convert me to the truthfulness of an over-easy egg served between two hot pancakes, covered with jam and syrup.

What are the staples that fill your pantry shelves and refrigerator bins?

Here are a few of the basics my kitchen cannot be without...

With brown sugar and cinnamon in the morning, baked into muffins for lunch or mixed into a suppertime meatloaf, it's classic all day long.

Canned tuna was the only fish I ate until I was 18 years old. So it never ceases to amaze me that SALMON is the one food all my kids can agree on. They love it! I love it! Brad grills it! It is our favorite weekend meal.

Now, if I can just get 'em to try canned tuna...

We go through a jar a week. I don't know how all the peanut allergy moms get through the day.

I really don't.

Yep. It's Yop.

We are yogurt snobs. Only Yoplait. Especially thick and creamy.

Strawberry, key lime and peach. Yum.

Mmm! Mmm! Good.

This is our favorite soup. We eat it a lot. Try it with a little bit of ketchup mixed in.

Can you believe I actually never ate a bagel as a child?

Back in the horse & buggy days, there was no such thing as a corner deli or bagel shop in my Salt Lake City suburb. I didn't get my first taste of ring-shaped, cream cheese-filled deliciousness until junior high. After that there was no turning back.

These days, my own children would die of malnutrition without bagels. And strawberry cream cheese.

The only thing that disappears faster than chocolate chips around here.

My kids think they are candy.

And, last, but not least--the breakfast of champions.

Germade mush: eat your heart out.

What's in your shopping cart?

I don't even want to know what Germade mush is. But it doesn't sound promising.

Our staples are peanut butter (seriously pity the allergic kids' moms), turkey burgers, apples, eggos, and eggs. That's pretty much an entire day of eating here.

Eggo waffles, bagels and Yoplait yogurt are at the very top of our list too. Also frozen berries good for smoothies and warmed with syrup to top on waffles, milk, mac and cheese and deli turkey for sandwiches. Oh, and don't forget the Skinny Cows in the freezer.

Generic waffles, capri suns, smuckers real peanut butter, Mrs. Bair's whole grain bread, bananas, Baked Layes Sour Cream and Onion chips. Generic peach yogurt.

We have a hoard of frozen waffles, pancakes and french toast sticks, PB&J, soups, cheese and deli meat, yogurt, cereal, milk, fruit and most importantly, frozen treats like WW fudge bars and SkinnyCow.

What exactly is Germade Mush? We ate a lot of Spam Hash when I was growing up. My innards are preserved, I'm sure.

mmmm... fooooood....
you've made me hungry. except for germade mush. no idea what that is, but it sounds like a post waiting to be written.

i remember one time my mom bought spam. i couldn't get past the jelly coating on it, and gagged just looking at it. that would fall under the "not so fond childhood memories." i have a sneaky feeling germade mush may fall into the same category.

correct me if i'm wrong. please.

Bananas, Cheerios, Deli Ham, Sarah Lee Honey Wheat Whole Grain Bread, Grapefruit, Tortillas, Cheese, Low Fat Kettle Corn Microwave Popcorn, Crystal Light.

If I have these things on hand I could go weeks without grocery shopping. I'm boring and could eat the same thing everyday.

1. PB, creamy not chunky.
2. Wheat bread without seeds in it. Seeds are verboten.
3. Milk, one percent or higher.
4. tortillas
5. shredded cheese for the tortillas
6. I wish I could say some sort of fruit but it would be a lie. I have to force it.
7. Baby carrots
8. Crap that will cause cancer and infertility.

We had a babysitter that would bring grahm crackers and her mom's butter cream frosting. Oh man, those were good! My kids like those, to, they just have to have it with canned frosting.

My staples are everything to make chocolate chip cookies!

Lots and lots of blueberries.
Also: spinach, lots of garlic (we smell), steal cut oats, eggs, oranges, apples, whole wheat bread, mushrooms, tomatoes, quinoa, greens, nuts, and shallots. That is what is in my yin cart. My yang cart is filled with 5 gallons of whole milk, 50 billion cheeses, thick yogurt, butter-butter-butter, heavy cream, baguettes, chocolate, and some kind of mammal, fish, or bird.

I am a ketchup snob. Isn't that ridiculous? I can seriously tell the difference and love to have Heinz 57.
Eggs, fruit, bagels (isn't that funny that they were a staple for me growing up...well, I am 100% Jewish by blood and 100% Mormon by faith) milk, cheerios, and there will be an uprising if we don't have fruit snacks. I know, artificial colors, and flavors Mmmmmmm.
My kids also love chocolate pudding but they are currently on restriction from it because I have found it smeared on the couch cushions. Blech.

Around here, my husband thinks he will DIE if we don't have zesta crackers. He loves them with soup and smears butter on them. I don't get the whole butter thing. His whole family does it. ICK!
I love canned costco chicken. I put it in everything, frozen chicken breasts, whole wheat bread, REAL butter, spaghetti sauce, oatmeal, chimichangas from walmart, good seasons italian dressing, fiber one bars, cheerios, string cheese and cheddar cheese.

My mom was the child of a woman who lived during the depression so she never really bought snacks except for tortilla chips. It was always depressing to look in our cupboards for a snack (and embarassing when friends were over). It is no wonder why I gained 15 pounds my freshman year of college when I could buy my own food- and even (gasp!) box cereal.

However, some of my mom rubbed off and so we don't have a lot of snacks around the house but mostly because I don't want to eat them. However, we could never survive without Tillamook cheddar cheese (my husband the Oregonian was raised on the stuff). That has been a constant in our shopping cart the past seven years of marriage.

We eat a lot of peanut butter also. Creamy only, thank you! Other staples are baby carrots, Cheerios, lots of milk, and sandwich ingredients.

We just dined on strawberry dumplings with vanilla pudding, topped with chocolate sauce. I am moving to the Czech Republic for staples. See you next week. Love, Oma

Our staples are Serrano ham, colby jack cheese, queso fresco, buffalo chicken for sandwiches. Nesquick + 1% milk for the kids, diet coke, and Crystal Lite for me and the husband. Other food staples: tortillas, Tillamook cheddar cheese, string cheese, pretzels, frozen waffles, macaroni and cheese, apples and bananas . . . strawberries ONLY when we start getting the Driscoll's from CA.

Isn't Germade the same stuff as Farina or Cream of Wheat? LOVE THAT STUFF!

Hahahaaha! A few of your staples are ABSOLUTE staples at my house, as well! For SURE eggo waffles. DEFINITELY bean & bacon soup! It's not the kids that love that one, it's me.

My kids love apples. They inhale pears. They also scarf cocoa puffs & cinnamon toast crunch.

Great post!

I just LOVE posts like these. It's so fun to have a peak into other's pantries (not that I ever do in real life, only virtually).

Peanut butter is definitely a daily menu item around here. Eggs too.

I'm so glad you reminded me of bean and bacon soup. We used to always have that as kids and I have NEVER bought it for my own kids! It's going on my next list.

We're Yoplait lovers, too. However the thick and creamy is reserved for Mommy (it's better than icecream!).

Friends of the family used to spread Bean and Bacon soup cold on bread with mayo and make a sandwich. As I recall, it was pretty good. I've never actually had it cooked as soup. We love beans, we love bacon, maybe we should try it sometime!

Peanut butter is a staple in our house, too. Sandwiches galore, as dip for pretzels, slathered on bananas. I, too, wonder about families with peanut allergies. What can substitute for the versatility of peanut butter?!

What else? Kashi granola bars, bananas (lots of bananas for eating, for smoothies, in cereal, etc), Gala apples, baby spinach, skim milk, Tropicana (Mommy can't start the day without it) Goldfish, Pirate Booty, Shredded Wheat, Cheerios, Life cereal, Cream Cheese, Progresso Italian wedding soup.
