Overheard

"I used to wonder why all the mommy bloggers had so many posts about poop. Now I understand..." Auntie Min, after dealing with one "Underwear-Blowout" and one "Didn't-Make-it-To-the-Bathroom-Carpet-Drop" within 15 minutes.

"Mom, why is there a cat running around in our house?" Kid #1, after leaving all four outside doors wide open. Following this question, he grabbed a broom and a bowl of cold chicken, and chased the stray into the backyard while also trying to tame her for a pet.

"I want my hands dirty!" Kid #3, throwing a hysterical fit because I had washed his hands for him. He wanted to do it himseff. In a hysterical fit of my own, I grabbed a handful of leftover chocolate cake and rubbed it all over him so he could practice the independence he so desperately craves.

"Mom, can I have a Tums? This dinner makes my tummy hurt." Kid #2, always a pleasure to feed.

"Mac and cheese! Mac and cheese! MAC AND CHEESE!" Kid #4, enthusiastically demanding his dinner choice, after realizing it wasn't on the menu.

"Yeah, I'm really getting sick of restaurant food. I'm so tired of sitting around for all these long meals." Husband, long-distance from LA. It was hard to hear most of his side of the conversation...due to all the broom-swinging, cat-chasing, tantrum-throwing and food-dissing going down on the homefront. Hopefully, I managed to sound sympathetic. Restaurant food and sitting down for meals does sound really tedious.

Can I have some Tums. That's an ego booster for you!

That's so funny. Loved that. Dinner time is THE hands down most chaotic time at our house. Tonight Ethan told me after looking at what I made for dinner. "I can't eat that. I'm allergic." Nice try.

POOR YOU, restaurant food. My husband likes to call me and complain about the shoddy ROOM SERVICE! Get a clue, men of the world.

The chocolate cake rub. Oh, we've all been there. Sometime I'll tell about the mouth scratches one kid got from refusing the specially baked nuggets. A little force feeding never hurt anyone.

Sorry about the hubbie. I'm thinking up a special blog just for you.

Get a dog. They eat everything you fix, (usually from the kid's hands hiding under the table,) and they never complain. One time when Dee was regaling me with his out of town type problems, as I dealt with a house full of kids, I responded with, "Meanwhile, I'm stuck here in reality..." He still remembers it. Maybe I actually said it a lot of times.

Love the "Overheards!"

i really am going to miss this when i get on that plane tomorrow, gab! no matter how chaotic dinner time seems, tucking those teenies in with a story and a song is oh so sweet. what little rewards for HUGE mommy jobs.

i am glad you mommmys have a UNITED BAND OF BLOGGER SISTERHOOD to pat each other on the back, a computer to cry on, and a rejoicing, 'hallelujah.. you understand!' type of relationship.

p.s. you know.. waiting in line at a posh, fancy restaurant DOES get annoying. so does waiting for your pedicure to dry. geez. life is hard. gab, i hope my organic breakfast is served on linen tomorrow. hee hee. xo. iloveyou.

keep up the AMAZING mommy work. you ladies are heroes.

Oh, the cake rub had me laughing out loud for almost a minute. I love your honesty, cause we have ALL been there!

Ha ha ha, cake rub....

I agree about the dh complaints. Grrrr... For a while, my hubby would just go to Houston's (our fave restaurant) and order his two fave dishes EVERY night during one of his long-term out of town stints.

I wanted to kill him. In retaliation, I took the kids to fast food every night. Not the same, and I'm the one who suffered the weight consequences, but made me feel better, nonetheless.

ha ha ha! cake rub....

It would be easy to say that life is always harder when the husbands go out of town...but I'm living proof that those kinds of things happen every day anyway (and so are you). It just makes you all the more angry to know that the hubs is soaking it up in some posh hotel somewhere.

And poor Marta - yet another poop story to add to her list of reasons NOT to have kids.

I, like Celia, love the chocolate cake rub. We all do slightly physical things when we are sick of our kids and so I am so happy when others post about it.

And I just had a kid call and say, "Pick us up, MOM, we don't have time to take the long old bus home." And I'm thinking, "Oh yes you do, because in that 30 extra minutes of peace and quiet, I will finish my bills."

Let's be stellar moms together.
